DJ stenting

Overview

DJ stenting, or Double J stent placement, is a minimally invasive procedure used to ensure proper urine drainage from the kidney to the bladder. A flexible tube (stent) is inserted into the ureter to relieve obstruction caused by kidney stones, strictures, or swelling after surgery.

Dr. Swapnil Gholap specializes in safe and precise DJ stent placement and removal, using advanced endoscopic techniques to reduce discomfort and prevent complications.

When is DJ Stenting Recommended?

DJ stenting may be advised in the following conditions:

  • Kidney stones causing blockage or pain

  • Ureteric strictures or narrowing

  • Post-ureteric or kidney surgery to ensure urine flow

  • Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney due to urine buildup)

  • Urinary tract infections caused by obstruction

  • Temporary relief before definitive stone removal or reconstructive procedures

Procedure

  • The procedure is performed under local, spinal, or general anesthesia, depending on the patient.

  • Using a cystoscope or ureteroscope, the stent is inserted into the ureter.

  • The stent’s “Double J” shape keeps one end in the kidney and the other in the bladder, preventing migration.

  • The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes and is minimally invasive.

Benefits of DJ Stenting

  • Relieves urinary obstruction and hydronephrosis

  • Prevents kidney damage due to back pressure

  • Reduces pain and infection risk caused by blocked urine flow

  • Provides a temporary or long-term solution while planning definitive treatment

  • Can be placed and removed endoscopically, avoiding major surgery

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Most patients resume normal activities within 1–2 days.

  • Mild burning during urination or lower back discomfort may occur initially.

  • Drink plenty of water to flush the urinary system.

  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a few days.

  • Stent removal is usually scheduled 2–6 weeks after placement, depending on the underlying condition.

Possible Complications

  • Urinary frequency or urgency

  • Mild hematuria (blood in urine)

  • Stent migration or encrustation (rare, with timely follow-up)

  • Infection (preventable with antibiotics and proper care)
