Bladder : endoscopic removal

Overview

Endoscopic bladder removal, also known as Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) or endoscopic stone removal, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to remove bladder stones, tumors, or growths using an endoscope — a thin, flexible instrument with a camera and surgical tools.
This advanced technique allows Dr. Swapnil Gholap to treat bladder conditions without any external incision, ensuring minimal pain, faster recovery, and excellent outcomes.

When is Endoscopic Bladder Removal Needed?

Endoscopic procedures are recommended for conditions such as:

  • Bladder stones causing pain, frequent urination, or infection

  • Bladder tumors (benign or early-stage cancerous growths)

  • Obstruction in the urinary passage due to stones or tissue growth

  • Persistent urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bladder obstruction

  • Difficulty or pain while urinating

Procedure

During the procedure, a cystoscope (endoscope) is gently inserted through the urethra into the bladder. Using laser or resection instruments, the surgeon carefully removes stones or abnormal tissue under direct vision.
The removed tissue may be sent for biopsy if a tumor is suspected. The procedure is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and typically takes 30–60 minutes.

Benefits of Endoscopic Bladder Removal

  • No external incision or scar

  • Minimal pain and blood loss

  • Short hospital stay (usually same-day discharge)

  • Quick return to normal activities

  • Precise visualization for complete removal

  • Effective treatment for both stones and early-stage tumors

Post-Operative Recovery & Care

  • Patients may experience mild burning or blood in urine for 1–2 days, which usually subsides quickly.

  • Hydration is essential to flush out the urinary system and promote healing.

  • Most patients resume regular activities within 2–3 days.

  • A follow-up cystoscopy may be advised to ensure complete recovery.
