Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a blockage at the junction between the kidney and the ureter, known as the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. This obstruction prevents urine from draining properly from the kidney into the bladder, which can lead to pain, swelling (hydronephrosis), and long-term kidney damage.
Dr. Swapnil Gholap performs laparoscopic and robotic pyeloplasty for precise correction, faster recovery, and minimal scarring.
UPJ obstruction may be:
Congenital (present at birth) – Most common cause, due to abnormal development of the ureter.
Acquired – Caused by kidney stones, scar tissue, previous surgeries, or trauma.
Compression – From nearby blood vessels pressing on the ureter.
Infection or inflammation – Leading to scarring and narrowing of the ureter.
Common symptoms that may indicate the need for pyeloplasty include:
Flank or back pain (especially after fluid intake)
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Swelling or fullness in the abdomen or flank
Blood in urine (hematuria)
Nausea or vomiting due to kidney pressure
Decreased kidney function on imaging tests
Dr. Swapnil Gholap may recommend pyeloplasty when:
The kidney drainage is severely affected
Hydronephrosis is visible on ultrasound or CT scan
The patient experiences recurrent pain or infections
Kidney function is declining
Conservative treatment fails to relieve symptoms
Anesthesia – The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
Laparoscopic or Robotic Approach – Small incisions are made to access the kidney and ureter.
Correction of Obstruction – The narrowed section of the ureter is removed, and the healthy part is reattached to the renal pelvis to restore normal flow.
Stent Placement – A temporary stent may be inserted to ensure proper urine drainage during healing.
Duration – The surgery usually lasts 2–3 hours, depending on complexity.
Hospital stay – Usually 2–3 days.
Stent removal – Done after 3–4 weeks in an outpatient setting.
Pain and swelling – Mild and manageable with medication.
Normal activity – Most patients can resume routine activities within 1–2 weeks.
Follow-up – Regular imaging tests are recommended to confirm proper drainage and kidney function.
1. Is pyeloplasty a major surgery?
It is a minimally invasive but significant surgery to restore kidney function. Laparoscopic and robotic approaches make it safer with faster recovery.
2. How successful is pyeloplasty?
Pyeloplasty has a success rate of over 95%, especially with minimally invasive techniques.
3. Will I have a visible scar?
Laparoscopic or robotic pyeloplasty leaves tiny, barely visible scars compared to open surgery.
4. When can I return to work after pyeloplasty?
Most patients return to light work within 1–2 weeks, depending on recovery and type of surgery.
5. Does the kidney function improve after surgery?
Yes. In most cases, kidney function stabilizes or improves once normal urine flow is restored.
